Developed in the 1990s by Bert Hellinger, a German psychotherapist, this work has its seeds in family systems therapy. Bert Hellinger worked as a missionary for many years in South Africa and drew on Zulu cultural concepts, (as well as many Western therapeutic modalities), to develop this work. The premise of family constellations is best summed up by the following quote:
“A living system is defined not by the individual parts, but by the relationships between them. The flow of energy. The flow of love.”
Family constellation work transcends any intellectual understanding of our relationship to ourselves and others. It encompasses our past, present and future by tapping into the energy that connects our cultural history, our ancestors, our families and our individual self in the world. Many cultures have held this wisdom implicitly as a basic guiding principle to life. This deep soul work provides alternative perspectives on problems, profound insights and many gifts including clarity, strength and courage. Family Constellations Therapy can be applied to any challenges or difficulties that are affecting you currently.
“Suddenly all my ancestors are behind me. Be still they say. Watch and listen. You are the result of the love of thousands. If you are lost and need direction ask them – they are but a degree away and they can show you the next step.” Linda Hogan
